There are certain advantages to making your boss look good that everyone should know

Appreciate your boss goes a long way

Whether you actually appreciate your boss and his work, making him look good can benefit you in more ways than one. Difficult as it may seem, you can make that happen, if you want it enough. When there is a will, there is a way.

Get in your boss's good graces

By making your boss look good, the first thing you manage to do is get in your boss's good graces. As it is expected, your boss feels both flattered and grateful by your gesture. He feels that you are one of his employees that he can really trust and feels the need to return you the favor. All bosses prefer promoting employees that can make them look good, as they sense there is no antagonism between them, so do not be surprised if one morning you are offered a better position or even a raise.

Enjoy special treatment

By making your boss look good and getting in his good graces, another thing that automatically happens is that you enjoy special treatment from him. If you want a few days off or need to go out of the office to take care of something, in all probability you will get what you want, as opposed to another employee who simply does his job, without caring about making the boss look good.

Do not have to deal with temper tantrums

A boss that looks good because of you, will think twice about lashing out at you in case a problem arises. In all probability, he will reserve his temper tantrums for another employee, who does not go the extra mile to make him look good like you do. When it comes to you, your boss will be gentle, kind and professional. That means that you will avoid all the headaches and the pressure that goes with having to tolerate a boss yelling at you every 5 minutes, for 8 hours on a daily basis. That way, upon returning home from work you will be all set to have a good time, instead of going straight to bed to forget about the whole day.

Do not have to walk on eggshells

A boss that looks good because of you is always happy and he wants to share that happiness with others, most especially you. That means that you don't have to walk on eggshells around your boss. You will run no risk of having your words turned against you somehow. Even if at some point you say something out of line, chances are that it will go unnoticed by your boss, or even if he does notice it, in all probability he will let it go easily.

It is worth to try

With lots of advantages to making your boss look good, deciding to proceed with that seems so natural.

True to a point. I know so many people who are not genuine about there actions - they make their boss look good only to their boss, but behind the bosses back they tell a different story.
Bosses need to be wary of fakes and brown nosers.

@Mark> I used to have workmates who were really nice when the boss is around but were not when the big man is not there.

"Special treatment" can backfire for those receiving it. Back when I managed a satellite office for a well known niche publisher, I had some employees who went out of their way to make my life easier. I appreciated them but most of their coworkers resented them. Making your boss look good may work to your advantage if you are his private secretary, personal assistant, aide de camp, or in some other such position, but if you are just one of the minions consider how your coworker may perceive your actions and the special treatment you receive. Be sure that the special treatment is worth being ostracized by your equals.

You are right guys in that it can easily backfire. It is certainly for the best, when intentions are sincere, as both parties benefit from it. In cases where you may not get along very well with your boss but want to keep your job and prove your worth to him, trying to show his good traits instead of trying to antagonise him can pay off.
