Here are some tips that I have picked up on and observed both when interviewing and being interviewed. This is not an exhaustive list but if you follow some of these simple tips then it may increase your chances of employment.

The number one rule that I would always go by when seeking employment is: - always apply for a job that you have a modicum of interest in. For example, if you applying to work in a sports store and you have no interest in sports, you are at an instant disadvantage.

Keep it neat, for the applications that you do fill out by hand, always keep a spare, you never know what might happen. The key is to fill out a draft version first so that you can be sure you are writing exactly what you want to write.

If you are applying online, make sure that you do not submit it before you have reviewed it. It is so easy to make mistakes and these are easily picked up on.

Before the interview.

Do your research! Never underestimate this, though the interviewer will not expect you to know the company inside out, it definitely helps to know the recent background. This will demonstrate your willingness to learn and show that you have gone the extra mile!

What to wear? There are many mistakes that can be made when preparing for an interview. The key is to wear something simple that isn't going to distract the interviewer. Suiting is usually fine but if the job is less casual, opt for something slightly less formal, maybe just a shirt and tie or a blouse. When choosing what to wear, the most important thing is that you are comfortable. There is nothing worse than sitting through an interview and being uncomfortable.

The last thing to do before the interview is to relax. If you walk into an interview stressed, nervous and falling apart, you are not going to perform the best you can.

First impressions

There are three things that crucial in giving the right first impression.

Body Language (55%)

Tone of Voice (38%)

Words. (7%)

As you can see Body Language has by far the highest weighting. This is because it is the first thing that will strike the interviewer. If you have open Body Language it is likely to make the interviewer more receptive to what you may be saying. Equally, Tone of Voice is important. If you speak in a monotonous tone, without passion or interest, the interviewer is likely to get bored. Lastly, Words, you may think this is the most important category but it isn't. In the cycle of the interview, Words are the last thing that will strike the interviewer.

The Interview.

Here are some key survival tips to getting through an interview: -

1. Ensure that you know what your CV says, this could be the first thing you are challenged on.

2. Keep calm. You are far more likely to answer any questions competently if you are calm.

3. Be concise, do not ramble.

4. Be sure. That is to say, never dither on an answer and always be sure of what you are saying.

5. Be confident but not cocky.

6. Show your personality, the interviewer is looking for this as well as ability.

7. Never repeat yourself.

You have now done all that you can. There is no point in analysing the interview, this will only make you more nervous.

If you get the job, fantastic! If you don't, always ask for feedback. The interviewer should give you feedback if you ask for. This is crucial, how can you improve if you don't know what your pitfalls are.

Lastly, as hard as it may be, try not to get disheartened, it is all experience, be it good or bad. There is a job out there for you, it is just a case of searching.

Good Luck!
