Child labor may soon be allowed in India

Indian government recently passed amendments to labor laws, allowing children above 14 to work, without considering in depth the implications it has for the country.

If there is a possibility that a child cried to make my shoes..

I would walk barren feet. It is easy to pass laws when our children do not need to do work, and it is "others" children who would be slogging.

But it would encourage families to have more children

After all, employers would prefer children who are not able to exercise their rights under law, like they prefer uneducated people when compared to educated ones. Effectively, population control measures in the country will come to a naught, while the child is exploited, and may even be physically or sexually abused.

Child psychology

There is a mistaken feeling in the child that he or she has to provide for the family, when one of the parents is being irresponsible. If the situation is like this in the child's home, then chances of him or her adjusting to abuse or exploitation are more, because the child would believe that he or she cannot afford to protest since that money is essential for the family. In the process, we would actually be encouraging more irresponsible men who are drunkards or gamblers or idlers to get away with it. Is that so hard to think of? Such confusion will be there even in the minds of older children who are in teens and late teens.

Creating permanent classes in the line of caste system

Traditionally, Hindu society was divided based on caste system. Over the years, education blurred the lines though Indian constitution and politicians did a good job of fueling dislike and turning them into vote banks. But if people with little or no means are sending their children to work instead of sending them to school, where is the scope for them ever coming up? Effectively, we just made an arrangement for permanent labor class.

Rise in unemployment

It is obvious if children are employed, adults will not. And employers would prefer younger ones primarily because they are easy to exploit, less aware of their rights, more likely to be under pressure of mistaken responsibilities, and have lesser means to pursue any cases against employers, if things came to that.

So what will the unemployed adult men do in the country? Take to crimes of course. Human trafficking seems interesting enough or perhaps drug peddling. Right Mr. Minister?

What child should not be doing

It is easy to say that children do household chores. But those are the chores the child does for self and family. By going out to do some work, the child is traveling, losing time on travel, getting exhausted in the process, apart from tiring at work. This does not happen at home. There is no stress of responsibility at home. The child is at liberty to say no, I have to study. There is no dangerous work assigned to the child by parents.

Affecting the fabric of society too

If children learn the value of money, they are less likely to look after parents in old age, because parents did not look after them when they were young and went so far as taking away the monies. We might just see children fighting for monies, taking to crimes over small sums, and even killing parents for monies. Is that where we want to go Indians?

You have greatly elaborated on the scenarios. I hope the amendment to the child law (over 14 yrs being allowed to work on family work) is reversed.

One advice: You can add some pictures or videos to get more views for this article.

Vandana, I am shocked and agree it is a retrograde step for the country. Thanks for the highlight. I do not know how human rights groups within the country keep quite. Maybe,16 years will be alright - siva

I think even 16 is young primarily because hormones are still active. We are all animals with specific functions, and hormonal rush is more at adolescence. I would rather wait it out till 21 or so till things balance out.

It is true that ignorance is the root cause of most irresponsible happenings. Let us hope that things will be better.
