On-line tutoring is often an overlooked field. Compared to other on-line jobs it is surprisingly easy to gain employment and the pay is good!

With a still recovering job market, many people are looking on-line for their next job or even their next career. For those with a two year college or a recognized university degree in any field, on-line tutoring can be very lucrative.

Why become an on-line tutor?

Being an on-line or virtual tutor means you work for a recognized company with scheduled pay dates. Tutors typically make between $20 and $25 per hour, the higher end typically involves tutoring in the math and sciences; compared to other jobs on-line it’s an easy sell. Tutors come from all walk's of life; stay-at-home mom's, retiree's, and professionals.

Tutors work one on one via Skype or a through a tutoring website’s virtual classroom. Along with basic education qualifications, a sound knowledge of interactive boards, advanced computer searching skills and a new model laptop complete with camera and microphone are essential for communication.

Arguably the most interesting part of the tutoring world is the variety of students to tutor. While Kindergarten to Grade 12 in both the public and private sector make up the majority of tutoring opportunities; tutoring Community College, University and specialist tutoring opportunities also exist.

How to find on-line tutoring jobs

On-line tutoring jobs are found one of four ways: On-line job boards which often duplicate government job banks; web search engines, specialist tutor sites and and tutor directories.

Most tutor companies readily employ both American’s and Canadian’s. Once you have narrowed down your focus to the tutor site or sites (many tutors typically work for 2-3 due to amount of employment hours available) you need to begin the application process. While requirements vary from company to company, a resume, references and certified copies of educational transcripts are essential.

For most on-line companies prior teaching or tutor experience is not essential. Demonstrated leadership, volunteer work, and work supervisory experience in any field/ discipline go a long way to getting your first job.

How does it work?

Once your application and all relevant paper work have been received, you will be notified via email. Most tutoring companies conduct telephone and Skype interviews to get a good feel for the candidate. Once both educational and people skills have been assessed you will typically get matched with one student to begin with.

While some lesson plans may be created by the tutor, many tutoring companies take care of these themselves. Interactive smart board technology is utilised for both tutor and student, and pre-arranged tutoring hours are set. Typically one tutoring session does not last longer than ninety minutes and are usually thirty to sixty minutes.

As on-line tutoring companies are recognized businesses, you will be required to give them your SSN or SIN (Social Insurance Number) for relevant government deductions. Some companies do view tutors as freelance workers so deductions may be your own responsibility. While some companies do issue cheques, the majority pay through Paypal.

Pre-checking an on-line business

Just as you would research any prospective business or freelance opportunity, on-line tutor companies need to be verified. The Better Business Bureau can advise you of any unresolved complaints; a quick Google search can let you know of any on-line discussions and a check of whosisit will verify the business is real.

Any legitimate tutoring organization will allow you to speak to other tutors prior to hiring and will never ask you for your SSN until you have received confirmation that you have been formally hired.

On-line tutoring can be fun and lucrative. You can pick your shifts and typically work for several different companies at once. Many tutors make between $800 and $1600 per month, without ever having to leave the house!

I have thought of doing this myself. I suppose 22 years of home schooling would count for some kind of experience.
