My Journey In Saudi Arabia

Memories that will remain in my heart while working abroad. First in Al Khafji and the second time in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The ups and downs in my career as a Nurse that made me a strong and determined person.

First Timer

The first time I worked abroad was in Al Khafji, Saudi Arabia. I was single then. So young and naive. I was assigned at the Male Medical Surgical Ward.

Language Barrier

I don't know how to speak Arabic . I was struggling with this Language in my first few months, but later on, I began to speak it without asking the translation of my co-workers. I was even able to communicate well with my patients.

It wasn't really good Arabic, but the mere fact that I was able to deliver it clearly and my patients understood me,

Learning the Language

I think Communication was at its best. I never realized that learning one's language isn't hard after all. If you have the willingness and determination, everything will just be a piece of cake.

Nurse of the Month - Is it a Dream?

Once upon a time in Al Khafji, Saudi Arabia, a struggling Filipino Nurse works in an Oil Company Hospital just near the boundary of Kuwait. She was first assigned in the Male Medical Surgical Ward but after a few months was transferred to ER/Triage. She's really not into Nursing. It's not what she wanted in life. It's not her First Love. But, she has no other choice but to continue her job to help her parents and siblings back home in the Philippines.

She met a lot of friends & acquaintances during her years of stay in that hospital. But, it cannot be avoided that she was also belittled by some. She did everything to gain their approval and trust. She improved her craft. She enhanced her skills in some nursing procedures. She attended all the seminars and workshops offered by the hospital. Most importantly, She established a good relationship with her patients and showed care, concern and good service. That made the difference that was later on noticed by her Superiors.

When she was transferred again to another area, this time the Female Medical Surgical Ward, six months before she left that hospital, A Special Award was given to her. 'NURSE OF THE MONTH', that's for June 2004. She was really not expecting this kind of recognition. There's a lot more qualified than her. But its the patient of that Ward who Voted for her. She was so happy and proud! She can't believed what she has done. It' really a great achievement on her part!

Second Time Around

The second time and I hope the last was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I was already married without kids. I left my husband with the hope that I will be able to save for our dream house. The experienced I have in my second job wasn't really a memory worth remembering. I accepted the offer, even though it was just a Clinic.

Against All Odds

Our salary was always given late... very delayed that our family at home needed it so badly to pay our bills and to pay our creditors.

But, despite of all the odds we have experienced, we just enjoyed our stay and celebrate special occasions like Birthdays, Christmas Party and New Year's Eve Celebration....

A Different Kind of Experience

Though I was assigned as a Dental Nurse, my job entails a lot of hardwork and dedication because of the surge of patients coming in and out of the clinic each and every day.

The Management acknowledged my efforts and I was given a salary increase just before I turned one year.

Time To Go

They permitted me to have my vacation. I went home and promised myself not to come back. I can't bear to stay in a place where I am not secured and have a lot of doubts if they could still pay us, henceforth.

My husband also asked me not to leave him again. And I agreed. I chose to stay with my family. No Regrets whatsoever.

I think you are from Philippines. I consider nursing job as one of the toughest and to work within a different culture, that too Saudi Arabia, is not for the fainthearted! Good that you are back with family - siva

Thanks for sharing your experiences in two different cities. I can imagine how you suffered overseas, but getting the award was great. I am sorry though that your second time wasn't that good. But yeah, staying positive helped.

Even I'm not working as a Nurse now, at least, I have proven to myself that I can be a good and loving caregiver to my patients. Thanks friend, Job/ Bogel/nerdieeds :-)
