Sleeping on the Job

Some people get fired because of sleeping while on duty. Fortunately, not all can suffer the same penalty.

Almost everyone loves to sleep

Experts require eight or more hours of sleep for a person’s good health. And who wouldn’t like sleeping? Except, for a few that lives on Elm Street, most people loves to take a nap. Sleep is to rest. While it is also a way to escape reality, sleep can be very irresistible. Even at work, it can be very seductive.

The Boring Hours

Eight out of ten employees - security guards, nurses, teachers and office workers, admit that one to four in the morning and afternoon are the sleepiest hours. Model employees try to resist sleep. They would try to keep doing their work then discover themselves dozing off.

Some companies understand the value of sleep. They give ten to fifteen minute nap allotment to their employees. These companies believe that a few minutes break can help an employee freshen up to do their work better.

Resisting Sleep

There are ways to keep awake. Speakers, upon sensing their audience losing interest, would invite them to stand up. Next they will ask them to throw their arms into the air, clap their hands then stomp their feet on the ground for a minute or two. Quite an effective method, with an explosion of laughter afterwards, but doing this in the office can be very silly.

Usually employees eat or drink beverage to keep awake. They listen to buoyant music, shift work positions, even pace around their work area. Some would open their window for a cool air to make them alert. And still, some remain wakeful by sniffing onto something potent like coffee or mint.

People Paid for Falling Asleep

Security guards and other night duty workers are paid for staying awake. But, there was a job that people were paid to lie on a bed.

In February 2009, there was a hiring at the New museum of the contemporary art in New York. One hundred women from eighteen to forty years old were needed for the exhibit 'The Generational: Younger Than Jesus'. These women were paid ten dollars an hour after sleeping in bed from noon to six in the afternoon. They were given sleeping pills approved by doctors. Chinese artist ChuYun, calls the art ‘a human sculpture induced by sleep’.

Some thought of it as weird job - being the ‘actual’ exhibit while sleeping. But, for those who had been laid off from a job, it was worth applying for.

The Bottom Line

Sleep is a privilege. Have enough sleep any chance you can. But, do this ethically - at the proper place and at the proper time... and with your boss's consent. :D

Sleep deprivation is also cumulative in its impact.... lie mercury build up in the body. Once lost, it is never fully regained nor is the consequence ever fully compensated for.
