Training and Sales: A Good Reason to learn Public Speaking

Public speaking is a skill that everyone needs to develop, not just TV presenters and politicians, if you are attending an interview or are presenting to people, such as a salesman or trainer then your ability to communicate well is vital to the success of the job that you do.

Public Speaking, Why All The Fuss?

Having recently attended a presentation where the presenter had many years of experience in their field of expertise, but failed to make their presentation professionally, a point of contention at the beginning of the meeting lingered through much of the meeting and eventually caused an explosion of personalities and conflict. Repairing relations at this stage became troublesome.

It is not infrequent to hear the question "Public Speaking, Why All The Fuss?" It is true that many people are afraid of public speaking because they perceive themselves as not being good speakers, and it is very true that many people have reached a certain level of comfort, but don’t know how to get any better at it than they have always been. Truth is there are a few simple rules that can help people become better speakers.

Indeed I once penned an article entitled "The Secret Formula to a Great Speech" which is about the art of public speaking and encompasses many of the things that I have learnt on my journey through Toastmasters. If you wish to learn to speak better then I highly recommend that you join Toastmasters in your local area. Toastmasters International's website can assist in finding a local club.

Setting your mind to it

The biggest challenge anyone faces in speaking is the need to be understood. You simply need to find out how and you should do this from people who already have experience, let them provide you some tips and have them listen to a speech you have prepared in order that you can improve.

In some respects it seems that public oration and debating skills were highly valued in the past and seem to have become less valued today in a world where snippets and sound-bytes persist, yet there is no reason why these skills should become forgotten. Look at your political leaders and you will see those that you think are good speakers, and for a moment you must ignore the politics of what they are saying but look at the mechanics of how they speak and you will see that some are very good speakers indeed. They would be at home giving keynote speeches at industry conventions, weddings, or any other formal gatherings. Not all were smooth and professional when they started but they have honed their skills over many years.

The sad truth though is that the vast majority of politicians are not good speakers, but we are only able to understand that by evaluating how they put together their speech and how they convey their message to the audience (and more importantly how that audience receives the message).

How do you improve your orating skills? Simple, by speaking in front of others then being evaluated for your efforts. Evaluation is at the heart of the Toastmasters program and believe me if you have done any public speaking, whether or not you are a member of Toastmasters you will have evaluated your own speech, you will even do this mid-interview, every time you have answered a question. Truth is you will curse the things you missed out or did wrong even before finishing what you have to say, but having someone else tell you the things you did well and the areas in which need improvement can help you tremendously, because some of the things you thought you did poorly they thought you did well and visa-versa - other people have different perceptions.

Everyone needs to learn to speak better

Let us be clear everyone needs to learn to speak better. Every World Champion of Public Speaking (and there is such a title) will tell you that they are still improving themselves.

Just think for a moment about a young person applying for their first job, they have no real experience, but then neither does anyone else who is applying - all of them are young and fresh out of school, certainly eager, but not skilled. How will they stand out from the crowd? Who will get selected? It is clear that only those that have an ability to communicate with their potential employer are more likely to be asked to return for a second interview and perhaps be offered the job. At this stage it is not about the qualifications that you have but how you communicate that makes all the difference.

But what has attending an interview got to do with public speaking? Job interviews are conversations between two (or more) people and the better you speak the greater your chances are at being successful. It is all about the fine art of communications, the good public speaker will seek to convince their audience of their viewpoint, just like the interviewee who is attempting to persuade the prospective employer that they are the best person for the job, it is all about speaking with power and conviction in whatever circumstances you find yourself. The more confident you sound the more likely it will be the listener will feel that you can do the job.

There is no reason to be afraid of speaking in public it is simply one of many challenges we face daily. You are not afraid to chat with friends about your common passions, whether that be shopping or the performance of your local sports team. Well public speaking is simply taking that to the next level.

Every Speaker needs to Listen more

Listening is a crucial counterpart to public speaking. I have attended hundreds of presentations over my thirty years in business and as a part of that I have developed a skill of asking questions that are intended to confirm everyone's understanding of the material in front of them. Frequently I use a technique that proposes a hypothetical scenario, followed by a controversial question, to which I already know the answer, the intent of the question is to confirm or repudiate a specific proposition and make sure that every person present is absolutely clear about what they can and cannot do in the specific situation.

One vital skill of any speaker is learning to listen, particularly when it comes to answering questions and there are two key aspects here, listening to the whole question and not jumping to conclusions, also the speaker should not assume that the person asking the question does not understand the idea being proposed, most questions are aimed at clarifying the detail not about the basic proposition that was discussed.

Speaking and listening are key language tools that allow any person to communicate better and convey ideas to other people, the more effectively you communicate the more likely it is that you are understood, but it is always important to check understanding at every stage.

Nice post. . .I learned these skills in my speech class at Anthem. . .as hard as it was to do a speech course online. . .I agree it is important to learn how to speak in front of an audience. . .

It seems there are two types of people in this world those that believe they know not how to speak and those that believe they were born gifted - but the truth public speaking is a skill that can be learned.

I keep calling to the speaker in me, but he has taken a vacation...in the Bahamas I think. Apart from that this article is great, I guess everyone must learn how to talk, how to walk and all that jazz. No jokes!

Sure we all know how to talk, and in the same way as how we walk. But the key point here is that if you are going to have a career that involves speaking then you had better learn hot to do it properly.

Peter, excellent article. I belong to an emergency response team and I've had to go out and do a presentation to recruit members. Fortunately I'm not shy when it comes to speaking in public. I just wish I could have read your article before I presented my material. I did recruit some new members. I belong to CERT. It stands for Community Emergency Response Team.

Thanks Peter,

I even shy away from just reading the gospel reading in my local church.

I notice so many people also mess-up just reading the reading. Adding extra words, leaving out other words, jumping past words, skipping whole lines.

I guess they're nervous out the front just reading, how much more for someone speaking!

&Spirited actually reading a text is one of the hardest things to do because we have a strong desire to augment the story that we are telling rather than read it and not interpret.
